Let me know if you ever want to come out here and hike. You can even stay at my place if you need too. I go out almost ever weekend for a hike somewhere in the county.

Frank -- nice pictures! Looks like you guys had a great time up there.

I don't get up to the Los Padres that often, but your pictures might just light a fire under my desk chair for a long weekend trip.

Nice web site on Matilija. I love the place and find myself hiking throughout the area most of the year. A constant flow of water makes the place special for southern California. I was wondering if you have ever tried the North Fork near Old Man Mountain? The best waterfalls and swim holes are located up that fork. Check out my pictures of the area. Last weekend some friends and I followed the creek for several miles using rope when needed. We found some great waterfalls and swim holes miles back where nobody goes.

Hello Modern Hiker,
I am so glad I found your post! I was going through our swimming hole book and read about Matilija creek and did some further web search and realized that it would be a fun place to possibly backpack along. Your review of your backpack into the area has me all excited to go on our own little adventure making sure that the dog stays away from skunks!

Betsy,

If you've got Google Earth, check out the KMZ file for an overview, and please purchase a map before you go. Never, EVER head into the wilderness without a map. Or any of the other Ten Essentials.

There's really only one established trail that cuts through the canyon, so if you stick to that, you should be fine - depending on where you're going. If this is your first time, I don't recommend exploring off the beaten path.

As for the weather, just check before you go. It's been getting chilly overnight here in L.A., but I'm not sure how it is up in Los Padres.

Good luck!

wow, sounds like a great adventure, i was wondering, if im going on Nov. 23,2007 to Matilija Creek, will it be cold, and will we be able to jump into those water pools. And also, since it will be our first time, what kind of shoes do we have to buy? And, is there hints on what trail we should be on? what if we get lost?
