Can I Just Say

What a complete mind-blow it was to hear President Bush say the phrase “climate change” without preceding it with “there is no such thing as”? And then to hear him urge higher fuel standards, energy efficiency, and alternative energy? And then to see the vast majority of Congress standing up and applauding in agreement?

Wow.

Yeah, there’s still no such thing as ‘clean coal,’ and the more I read about ethanol the more I think it’s just a political pander to the midwest, but still.

Here’s hoping something actually gets done!

Ethanol, as it’s currently produced, is a complete joke. It’s made from corn that is grown using fossil fuels. It takes something like 55 gallons of oil to grow and harvest one acre of corn, not to mention the oil it takes to process and ship the corn. Complete waste of time.

What’s most upsetting about ethanol is it makes such an easy sell to the public when you run it through the media and pour a heavy coat of gloss over it. “You mean I can make gas from corn? Corn we grow right here? Sign me up!”

Nevermind that we can’t even grow enough corn to make ethanol and eat at the same time. That and ‘clean coal’ (”It *can’t* be bad. It’s got the word ‘clean’ in it”) are probably going to be the biggest obstacles to meaningful clean power in this country.
