Full disclosure.

I was a non-camera traveler for perhaps 20 years. But the ease and low cost of cameras now have me carrying a lightweight digital all day, every day.

Still — I try not to "set up" or wait for "photo ops".

As the old joke goes.

passer-by on the street: "What a beautiful baby."

mother: "You should see the photos!"

Casey: your reading was correct. For people like us who are posting photo essays of our hikes, the camera's pretty much a requirement, but everybody else ought to be honestly asking themselves if they really need to have one if all they're gonna do is look at the pictures once or twice and forget about 'em.

I'm in the 'no camera' camp, but, like WinterWarlock, I sure enjoy other hiker's pictures. It helps when researching a hike on the internet - finding obscure trail heads, cross-country route finding, etc.

I find that even taking the time to decide whether to get the camera out or not detracts from my hike and the moment.

Enjoy your site.

As long as you're out there, it doesn't matter what you bring. I carry my FILM camera with two lenses - it adds weight, but it's what I do. I also usually carry a sketch kit, but that may change to a small watercolor set as well as I try to improve my technique. As they say - HYOH (Hike Your Own Hike).

BTW - I love looking at other's pics, especially of places I'm unlikely to get to anytime soon, so I hope there are still plenty of hikers who do still take their cameras so I can live vicariously!
