Just stumbled upon this post today. Have been in Japan for 3 years and been to Takao-san hike many a times. You have done a wonderful job of getting the real feel of the place in writing ! Hope you write about more trails in Japan soon ... (if you are currently not in Japan, probably on your next visit)

A zoo, eh? That makes a lot more sense than "look out for happy monkeys."

As you know, there's very little English out there. So we were really just using the pictures to try to direct us to the temples. So much of that hike was left to chance, but it is hands down one of the most beautiful areas I've ever been in ... and definitely the highlight of my trip to Japan.

I have been living in Japan for almost a year and daytrips to Takao san have been very helpful when I need a bit of fresh air. I liked your photos a lot. Maybe I will try this new path, as I usually take others. No monkeys found, though? (the sing you mentioned at the beginning actually refers to a small "zoo" on the top) ...

Wow. I'd never thought watching a tech show would eventually lead me to a blog about hiking. I hope to visit Japan someday, and this post has certainly made me want to go there even more. Your writing is excellent, thank you for posting. Great work on the show too.
