I take it all back. This could be the worst unit ever. I've already sent back 2 and have 1 more on the way. They turn off constantly for no reason and are, in general, wholly unreliable. Very frustrated and the wheel design is terrible. Twice as difficult to take notes on waypoints. What they added in map functionality, which is great, they removed from ruggedness and reliability. I'd rather not have the maps and be able to rely on the unit...we're considering switching brands entirely, not because of this experience per se, but it certainly reminded us of how long we've been using Garmin and that it may be time for a change.

Wow ... Garmin told you those little splashes are machine-killers? They call it waterproof in their description!

I found the firmware improvements and features nice the software is a leep in functionality. The satalite tracking is great. The thumb wheel and crappy menu layout was frustrating. The case design just sucks. Sold as IPX7 but it is not. I went through 2 units in 6 months. The first one was splashed while going across a fair weather crossing and died. The second one got rained on while boating and went nuts then stopped working within a week. Garmin said they are not designed to get wet and rain is bad for the device. They also said it was ment for weekend hikers and car use and was not rugged designed. They suggested I get the GPSMap60CSc or GPSMap70CSx. I have had a GPS V for years and plan to get it fixed since the processor went bad.

The software and map viewing functions were great but the usit as a whole is junk for the geocacher and not an outdoor adventurer. It is ashame the body design was not better thought out and made to be rugged.

Nice review and fair. After having a 400t for more than two months I would tend to agree with all your main points both for and against.

You mentioned a trackback feature. I've played with this unit extensively and it doesn't have it -- at least the software I'm using. What version of software do you have? Goto Setup->System->Options->Software Version. Maybe you have a prereleased version of software? The released version are 2.4 and GPS software 2.6.

Also note that navigating to a track is not a trackback. Trackback (at least on the other Garmins) would turn a track into a route with waypoints, reverse it and allow you to navigate back along the route.

Hey there, just stumbled across this blog in researching the new Garmin 400t. It's an excellent and accurate unit. We'd been using the CSx and CS before that for our trail mapping on ProTrails. Anyhow, I highly recommend the Garmin units in general and am looking forward to playing around with it in the field. We did our first official trail with the new unit. It was great. Nice blogging! -Dave from ProTrails.com
