Looking for New Boots

Another New England transplant wrote me this morning (how many of us are there here? You guys all want to get together to try to find good apple cider?) because she wants to take advantage of the the big REI Anniversary Sale before it’s over. Her target: New boots. She writes:

Wanted to see if you have any advice on good brands. I used to have high-top ones for ankle support, but I rarely hike with a big pack anymore and mostly just do day hikes, so I figure I maybe don’t need to buy big ol’ heavy ones.

I’m partial to the high-top boots myself, and recommended the Vasque Breeze, a lightweight, superbreatheable high-top that’s done me very well for over two years on short day hikes and 3-day backpacking trips. As luck would have it, both the
women’s
and
men’s
versions are on sale, too.

… but since I’ve already found my preferred boot, I’m not much help if she gets to the store and doesn’t dig the Vasques. So does anyone else have a favorite lightweight boot or low-top hiking shoe? Share! And hurry up, the sale’s almost over.

I don’t have much helpful to say, just want to shout out for New England transplants!

My Dad has had the same pair of Vasque’s for over 25 years. He had to get them re-soled once, but obviously it’s a good company.

When I was looking for boots I tried on all the big names (my Dad of course told me to get Vasque!) and all kinds of styles and actually ended up buying Timberlands because they fit my feet right. I buy regular shoes from Timberland too, so they just do good with my feet. But my boots are not light and REI doesn’t usually sell much in the way of Timberland boots. If you liked the boots you had before, maybe look at a different boot from that company?

But I’d reconsider getting ankle support. I only go on day hikes but I find if you are ever walking on any kind of rocks your ankles go all over the place when the rocks move despite how strong they may be and I’m very happy to have the ankle support.

    Good luck!

I really like the Vasque Kota GTX XCR’s. My wife has some Montrail Namche’s that she loves.

Another NE transplant here… I have a pair of REI branded Merrells that I absolutely adore (Monarch II GTX). Found them on the sale rack too to make it even better. I just bought my girl a pair of Lowa Renegade GTXs, but so far no mileage on them to report pros/cons.

And yes, let’s find some cider!
