Good report and thank you for the site. My son and I recently completed a 2 night backpack trip over much of this route. We got dropped off at Red Box the day after Thanksgiving and hiked to Devore camp that day. At this time of year we found the trail from West Fork campground to Devore to be pretty hard to follow. A combination of being poorly signed, despite the odd piece of orange flagging, and also being covered with fallen leaves made it a bit tough. The next day we went over Newcomb pass and then on to Spruce Grove for the night. Out to Chantry the next day via the Upper Winter Creek trail. One thing to note is the significant temperature difference between the two campgrounds; Devore was at least 20 degrees colder than Spruce Grove! Again, thanks for the site.

May not be able to go in January. Sprained my left knee. :( Perhaps in Feb.

As far as I know, they don't close the Mt. Wilson road very often because of all of the broadcasting that goes on from there. One might need chains of course.

Going down from Mt. Wilson in icy conditions (or going up the Rim Trail) would be very hazardous. I'll keep a close eye on the wx.

Alternatively, I might do the Brown Mtn Loop (Sunset Fire Road to Dawn Mine Trail to Dawn Mine to Tom Sloane Saddle to Brown Mtn to Oakwilde, stay the night at Oakwilde then Oakwilde to Fire Road up El Prieto Canyon to Brown Mtn fire road to Millard campground and back to my car).

Jim,

Glad this was able to help out. I bet this would be nice and quiet in January, although if the Mount Wilson Road is closed for snow, you might have to hike in from Red Box.

If you go, be sure to let us know how it went!
