This holiday season, you may be wondering what to get that special someone — especially with the dying economy and all. Well, some of the backpacking writers as Suite 101 suggest an alternative to gift card’s that’s also easy on the wallet — a holiday hike.
They write that hikes aren’t only green and cheap, but they’re also long-lasting and versatile — you can use it as a good “Get The Whole Family Together” activity, or choose a more romantic, secluded trailhead Just For The Two Of You.
Get a few more tips and ideas over at Suite 101, and let us know if you have a successful gift-giving experience.
I know if I opened up an envelope on Christmas morning and was doing something like this later on in the day, I’d be a happy camper:

… or more accurately, a happy snow-shoer, I guess.

The gift of shared experience out in the wild places…
I couldn’t agree more and am just thinking about a post on this…
The very best for this holiday season to you Casey!

I’m glad you found my article on giving a hike this holiday season interesting (and perhaps even inspirational?!). Some of my favorite holiday memories are from the trail (or the climb, as the case may be). The picture that accompanies the article is actually from a particularly memorable Christmas Day spent traversing the Presidential Ridge in New Hampshire with my wife. We spent Christmas Eve in a tent just below treeline on the Airline Ridge listening to Christmas music on the shortwave as it snowed FOUR FEET! The wind was gusting over 70 mph, and it was COLD, but we could not have spent a more glorious Christmas! Happy holidays to you and all your readers.
Best,
Ret Talbot
