We did this hike on 11/13/09. Not sure how, but we got a little lost. We actually got to the Loop Trail Junction on the eastern end first, went down into a stream area with oak trees, and came back out just short of the water tank. We kept going and ended up at the La Jolla campground, and we knew something was wrong. Then we went back again and finally found the water tank, and did the hike as written. We did the middle portion of the hike in reverse actually. I'd like to go back and try to figure out which turn off we missed, or possibly camp at that campground. Beautiful area, and will definately return in spring, if not sooner.

I did this hike on May 21 and was astonished at the magnificent displays of wildflowers. Giant coreopsis was already dead but the bush monkeyflowers were in full bloom especially on the leeward side of Mugu Peak. Saw a pair of California Quail with 12 chicks and a small water snake. Superb, easily accessible hike.

I just did this hike on Sunday and it was green and gorgeous and everything I wanted in a hike and more. You go through meadows, tall grasses, rolling hills, sycamore groves, etc, etc. This is highly recommended and very easy. We did the La Jolla Loop and got lost a bit, but it was easy to navigate our way back. We actually never made it to the peak but Im happy to save it for next time! Overall, the hike was over 3.5 hours. Currently, just a few wildflowers here and there, nothing spectacular but the scenery itself. The green meadows are amazing enough though. Now Im curious about Boney Ridge. Wheres the write up on that Modern Hiker?

One of the hidden treasures in La Jolla is the hike-in campground. It's sadly been waterless for the last few years, but it's in a beautiful spot, is first-come first-served and very little used, so it's great for a last-minute getaway. I've written up some more details here:
