REI Dividends

by Modern Hiker on March 5, 2009

… those annual gifts that both depress you by reminding you how much money you’ve spent on outdoorsy stuff the past year AND get you excited about spending even more money seem to be hitting mailboxes this week.

I usually file mine away for a few months, until I get the desire to upgrade or buy some big piece of equipment. It’s my New Englander save-for-the-lean-times mentality. I just bought some snowpants, which I could have used my dividend on, but instead thought, “nah, I’ll save it for later.”

What about you? What’s the Next Big Item on your to-buy list? An upgrade? Replacement? Or entry-level equipment into something new? A whole bag full of freeze-dried ice cream?

I’ve actually just picked up the hobby (or would that be interest?) of hiking and I was wondering what sort of gear you would recommend to someone just starting out with day hikes (picked up that phrase from REI)? I’ve seen the list The Ten Essentials, any specific recommendations on that list you would make, would you add anything extra, and is all that stuff on The Ten Essentails list necessary? I mean I think I can go on a 2-4 hour day hike without bringing emergency shelter along right?

I just bought some new hiking boots at the end of December. Used my meager dividend on that.

Wayne, that sounds like a great idea for a post!

Since I already got my SteriPEN, I think I’m going to spend it on a new pair of hiking boots

Just picked up an REI Halo +25 down bag and an REI 1.5 Lite Core sleeping pad. Just waiting to use them now. God Bless REI. (Divided amount $159.67)

Had no idea I had spent over a grand at REI last year…. but I used my dividend to get a down jacket for some snow camping. But now I need to help the better half get something big too because she spent most of the money for the dividend in the first place! (Doesn’t seem like they took returns off our dividend total, and we went through numerous pairs of boots….)

I like Wayne’s idea. But mostly because so many “essential needs” lists don’t really cover essentials.

I’m gonna use my dividends on new hiking boots. Or maybe a spare sleeping bag for guests? Or maybe a water purification system? Or maybe a GPS unit? hahaha They have totally snookered me.
