The world-famous Wildflower Hotline has updated once again for the first weekend of Spring, and while the desert areas are still popping with color, it looks like the L.A. area is going to see some very nice color soon.
If you’re in the mood for desert wildflowers, the Carrizo Plain National Monument and the lower elevations of the Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park are worth a visit this weekend.
Locally, the Theodore Payne Foundation reports their HQ in Sun Valley has good color, as do the lower Big Tujunga and Little Tujunga Canyons in the Angeles National Forest, Vasquez Rocks outside of Santa Clarita, and Pasadena’s Eaton Canyon.
Coastal Wildflower-stalkers will be most rewarded with a stroll through Malibu’s Charmlee Wilderness Park, with some pleasant views along the highway near Point Mugu Beach as a bonus if you’re coming in from the north.

Just wondering if anyone knows the identification of the plant pictured at the top of this page-I am guessing it is a salvia. I was on a hike up in Wheeler Gorge Ojai this past week and it is in full bloom. Thanks for sharing. Please feel free to email me.
