How to Avoid a Bear Attack

by Modern Hiker on July 15, 2009

It’s so rare to see an outdoor instructional video that’s both informational and entertaining. It’s even MORE rare to see one with great production value. But Randy Boyum’s piece on bear safety for Howcast has ‘em all!

Despite the cartoonish nature and genuine laughs, the tips on bear safety here are good to know – and it ends with a factoid that’ll set you a bit at ease after all those claymation decapitations.

I’m not sure that advice is sound. That submisiveness is supposed to be good for grizzlies, but I’ve heard that for our bears in California (black bears), you should “act large” and make yourself as big and intimidating as possilbe. Same for mountain lions…..

According to the CA Dept. of Fish and Game, you are encouraged to make yourself look large and make lots of loud noises if you run into a bear.

I remember reading somewhere a while back that black bears will charge, but stop short if you hold your ground — but grizzlies will just go right for ya.
