Parts of Angeles National Forest Re-Opened

by Modern Hiker on October 2, 2009

Big news – parts of the Angeles National Forest have re-opened to the public.

While the vast majority of the western Angeles National Forest will remain closed through September 2010 (or until later orders open up small chunks of that land), most of the forest to the east of the 39 is now open – including the Mount Baldy area, Mount Baden-Powell, and the Devil’s Punchbowl in the Antelope Valley.

Also re-opened are the extreme western portion of the ANF, the Desert Marksman Rifle Range, Little Rock Reservoir, and some portions of the mountains near Altadena. The Forest Service released a PDF map of the re-opened areas (which is a bit tough to read at close zooms), but it looks like Echo Mountain, Henninger Flats, and Santa Anita Canyon west of the Chantry Flats area are all good … although I can’t tell whether Chantry Flats itself is open or not. It does appear that the Echo Mountain area is closed south of Mount Lowe and Inspiration Point.

The forest service site info is from September 9th. Not too helpful. Not legible either.

Chantry Flats is open, was there today. They did reopen Hwy 2 from the east gate up to around Waterman, but with the Sheep fire in Wrightwood I’m told it’s closed again.

Pita – yes, I know –

The Angeles Forest Service web site, while in some ways very helpful, is usually very slow to update this sort of stuff, but the eastern section of the ANF is now pretty clearly open for business. Hopefully they’ll get a better map and actual details up there soon – especially for the open areas in the west, like Chantry Flats.

Because of the Sheep Fire near Wrightwood, good luck getting into the backside of ANF (Baden-Powell, etc.). Had a friend up on Baldy on Saturday, and he said it was PACKED! Have fun out there folks!

Thanks for the info MH.
