Station Fire Still Burning

by Modern Hiker on November 10, 2009

While the Station Fire has officially been contained over a month ago, that doesn’t mean it’s not still burning.

Smoke can still be seen around the Mount Wilson area, and that’s because many of the root systems are still smoldering – and could potentially be whipped up into full-fledged fires again by a strong wind. In a story on the L.A. Times, Mount Wilson Observatory Superintendent Dave Jurasevich said the fire may still technically be burning until (and if) we get a healthy dose of moisture from the winter storm systems.

Helicopters and firefighters are still being used to put out flare-ups. So, just in case you were wondering why the western Angeles National Forest was still closed after it seemed like everything was under control … now you have your sad answer. Looks like we’ll all be hitting the trails in the Santa Monicas and Baldy Bowl this winter, eh?

We did Cactus to (Tram) Clouds last weekend, that was fun. Thinking of hitting San G, that’s open right?

San G is open and probably still clear of snow, Dave. But not for long!

I’ve read about this kind of thing before. I’m hoping that, given the generally cooler pattern this year, we won’t see a flare up of the Santa Anas anytime soon. If the winter turns out to be an El Nino year as well, that would be icing on the cake.

From what I’ve read from the ANF, they don’t want to re-open the western part of teh forest until after the winter rains, then start stabilization at that point. Looks like it’s time for me to start exploring more of the section above Santa Clarita!

Yeah, GeekHiker – I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a mild and moist winter (but hopefully not moist enough to cause mudslides). Most of the closed area is my usual-ANF stomping ground, which I miss a lot – but you’re right – on the plus side, at least we’ll get to explore some lesser-traveled areas!
