Bryn is correct, the shortest way up is the paved service road. I regularly run through this area. There are other more interesting ways up. Most of the time I start at the Canyon road entrance or at the Sunset Ranch. I recommend hitting up both Mt. Lee and Mt. Hollywood on the same hike (or run). The view from both of these peaks is amazing. On a clear day you can easily see the ocean, the valley and the vast LA sprawl.

Sounds like you have a groupie, LOL. I've been up there many times, it's not really a hike as much as a paved single lane road that goes up to the radio towers up there. The whole thing takes maybe 30 minutes to an hour depending on where you start. You can't really get next to the sign either, the road goes up behind it to the top and it's all fenced in. Really nice view of LA from the top though, and pretty good for a short but still somewhat strenous hike close to home.
