Spam!

by Modern Hiker on January 20, 2010

Apparently, some piece of nasty software has been hanging out on my server, sending out spam from my domain. As a result, a lot of my outgoing emails are getting blocked or bounced back because I’m now on some sort of Spammer Blacklist.

I’m working on getting taken off of it – and trying to find out from my web host if they know anything. This may take a while, as this is not necessarily my strong suit – so if you’re expecting email from me, be sure to add me to your “trusted list” or check your spam folder to see if anything I sent you was accidentally trashed.

I’m betting this has something to do with that recent server attack, but what do I know? I’m just a hiking blogger, trying to write a hiking blog and instead dealing with bots. Blurg!

What a pain! We had this happen a while back so I asked our IT manager how she handled it. Here is her response:

There is a lots of work to get the name out from the black list.
1. Needs to make sure your domain is not sending the spam out anymore. We had Microsoft Tech help us with this.
2. You need to contact each domain when you know they put you on the black list. Most important is clear your domain name from Hotmail account, when hotmail put you on black list, lots of domain will put you on the black list as well. As soon as when you out of the black list from hotmail, your domain name will release from most of the domain.
3. Go to http://postmaster.live.com for how to remove blacklist from hotmail. Hotmail tech can even temporary release your domain name from the list while you are working with them.
4. Some of the domain, you just have to call them when you know that you are on their blacklist. It is easy, you just need to call them and tell them the issued has been corrected already. Just like GenomeWeb, I needed to call them to release our name from their list when we had the blacklist problem before. Most of the company will work with you and help you with this kind of the problem.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
