I’m a little sorry to keep harping on Anza-Borrego here, but I really want to let LA hikers know about this little gem to our southeast. Also, the wildflowers are probably going to be pretty amazing this year, and it’s worth a trip to see them.
Here’s a PBS video on the current bloom and some future bloom predictions. A KPBS reporter heads out into the desert with a ranger, who does a good job of pointing out some of the more abundant flowers you’ll see and handing out some tips for visitors.
via San Diegan 100 Peaks, who’s been doing a really great job of keeping on top of the Anza-Borrego bloom news this year!

Psst. It’s 100 Peaks, not to be confused with 100 Hikes, Kolby’s successful mission.
Thanks for the mention, BTW!
D’oh! That’s what I get for trying to write while the TV’s on.
Harp away! Thanks for the information; it reminds me to get ready for the spring hiking season and the wild flower bloom. I linked to some photos of the bloom in 2008 taken in Coyote Canyon, Anza-Borrego SP.
Took the day off work yesterday and drove out to the southern part of Anza Borrego. Wildflowers are really starting to come up.
The S2 is lined with Desert dandelions, Chuparosa, Lupine and Brittle Bush
Weather was a bit warm bu the breeze made it nice.
This weekend should be great.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks for the update, Bob!
Just wanted to confirm – yes, the Anza-Borrego wildflower blooming season has begun! Went there yesterday (3/19) with my husband, and witnessed the beginning of a sea full of yellows and purples. Absolutely beautiful. I predict in the next week or two, there will be plenty more blooms. And when you hit it just right, the caterpillars will have transformed into butterflies, adding to the breathtaking experience (I’ve seen this in past years)!
Which also means, don’t forget your hiking shoes! These flowers attracted a ton of hikers all over the desert yesterday. It’s perfect weather to get that hiking gear in use, and experience the beauty of San Diego County’s desert…especially before it gets too hot. We went on the Anza-Borrego Palm Canyon Trail, and it completely transformed our perception of the desert (you’ll see waterfalls, walk through a “flash flood” area, and walk through plenty of shaded rest areas). Once you reach the end of the marked trail, you’ll approach a naturally-occurring oasis, made of quite a few palm trees. It’s incredible.
Thanks for your initial post about the wildflowers in Anza-Borrego! Everyone should experience the wildflowers and unique hiking trails out there.
