The Adams’ Pack Station at Chantry Flats is one of the last operating pack stations in the country. It, along with most of Santa Anita Canyon, was spared during the Station Fire, but now the historic general store may be forced to close its doors by the L.A. County Health Department.
According to a recent post from NBC Los Angeles, the department has demanded the Pack Station make renovations to its food storage, plumbing, and water draining or face closure. The store not only sells Adventure Passes, ice cream and cold drinks, but it’s also a coordination center for canyon rescues, and the only supply and communications link to the Forest Service cabins in Santa Anita Canyon and the complex at Sturtevant Camp.
The renovations could cost anywhere between $5-10 thousand, which is pretty tough for a small business to absorb. The Pack Station is asking for tax-deductible donations to the Friends of the San Gabriels, which will help defray the costs.

Well it’s time to pony up kids! Let’s help keep this bit of history open. It’s such a great place with friendly folks (and critters!) it would be a shame if they had to close. Of all the cockroach infested dives in LA, they had to land on their doorstep. I’m going to their site and donate right now!
Hey Casey, Were you up there on Sunday Afternoon? I took my family to Sturtevant Falls on Sunday and saw someone who looked like you but I told myself that it wasn’t you. But now after seeing this post about the Pack Station I’m wondering if it was you. BTW everyone, Sturtevant Falls is the prettiest I’ve ever seen it! The rains have done alot of good for it this year. Its a perfect time to visit the pack station to show some support.

Santa Anita Canyon is one of my favorite places to hike around L.A., and the folks in the Pack Station are top-notch. I’m really hoping they can pull through with these renovations.
The canyon would not be the same without the pack station, it takes me back to a quieter and more simpler time
