More Pot Found in the Santa Monica Mountains

by Modern Hiker on April 14, 2010

Cannabis Farmer, Ginak Island Gambia Last year, there was a $10 million pot bust in Malibu Creek State Park and Zuma Canyon, netting over 3,500 plants. Apparently, the illegal growers didn’t get the memo that people are looking out for them now, because another 900 plants and 3,000 seeds were just seized again in Malibu Creek State Park.

Two men were caught tending to the plants, and were apprehended and charged with suspicion of marijuana possession, possession of a concealed firearm, and destruction of plants and geological features after a chase.

No word on whether or not this operation had any of the harmful fire pits or irrigation systems of the previous raid.

Glad to hear they finally caught some of these idiots! I heard they also recently found a large pot farm in a remote area of Placerita Canyon. If there’s money to be made, they will continue to disrupt and degrade the environment in search of profit. I wonder if legalizing pot would cut down on these types of operations or simply increase them….?

Last summer in San Diego County, in Cuyamaca State Park, DEA stumbled upon a farm of 50,000 plants, via helicopter. There was irrigation, litter, a deer carcass, but no arrests.

Linda, this is just another reason to legalize marijuana. You don’t see people destroying local ecology to grow tobacco and distill their own alcohol. These operations are fueled by demand. Also don’t forget, in addition to ecological damage, these “farmers” also set deadly traps and will shoot at anything that moves. I had the displeasure of running across a shot gun trap on Mt. Palomar, luckily I didn’t set it off.
