I got my copy of the Backpacker Maps Issue in the mail today, and it definitely lives up to its title – it’s 104 pages on cartography, Google Maps, mobile phone apps, GPS, and even a roundtable discussion on the future of mapping.
Also of note – yours truly is mentioned in the California section as a “Reader Expert.” A while back, the editors asked me a few questions about hiking in Southern California. I wrote about 5 pages worth of information on 15 different questions, but this is the magazine business – so it all got boiled down to this:
Oh well. Still pretty neat!

Yep, that is pretty neat. I’ll have to pick that up.
Congrats, Casey! That’s awesome.
But Pinnacles is a SoCal hike? I don’t blame you for that.
Ironic that the editors of the “maps” issue never consulted a map when they wrote that up.
They asked me what was one of my favorite hikes in California, and since I’d just spent 4 and a half pages talking about trails in the San Gabriels and Santa Monicas, they asked me to elevate a trail I hadn’t already mentioned. Thus, the Pinnacles High Loop :)
What? No Modern Hiker URL?
Very cool indeed.
That’s awesome! But 5 pages condensed down to 1 sentence? WOW
Dude, that’s awesome! I’m honored to be in the presence of greatness!
Mostly harmless.
Great story, congrats on the mention!
Stuart, I know it’s still early, but you may have just earned the Winningest Comment of the Year right there.
That’s awes…
They should run that under favorite July hikes, too. Pinnacles is a real hoot when it’s 110 degrees, outside :)
Saw that while thumbing through the mag today. Awesome!
I say this is just the beginning, Casey. I imagine that with five-pages worth of hiking info from one of the most experienced hikers in the area, your name is bound to show up again in future issues.
I’ve been (mis) quoted before by the media. It seems par for the course.
Even so, kudos for the recognition. I’m going to B&N to pickup a copy of the issue today!
