Just a quick note to let you know the Antelope Valley Poppy Preserve is currently in peak bloom.
The LAist has a post with all the details, but apparently the time to see massive carpets of orange flowers is RIGHT. NOW.
I was out in Point Mugu State Park this weekend, and while there were a few colorful patches on display (and lots of bright green grass), the flowers there look like they may need a little bit more time to warm up for a big show.
As always, be sure to check the Theodore Payne Wildflower Hotline for the best flower-peeping planning info!

I just went this past weekend – it was AMAZING! Brilliant orange blankets of poppies covered the hillsides. It was more intense than anything that I had imagined. Please go and experience this. The ranger said that these next two weeks are your best window!

The hills along the east side of the Grapvine are also a riot of color–looks like Nature smudged purple, orange, and yellow pastel all over the place. You can exit at Gorman and backtrack along a side road to get closer to them.
Blooms all over the high desert. Yesterday, I was in Joshua Tree. Carpets of yellow on the south side (Bajada trail and road from I-10 to Cottonwood entry station). Possibly already past peak.
Last week, I was at Amboy Crater, south of I-40 and adjacent to old Route 66. Full bloom there, too.
Two weeks ago, I was in the Antelope Valley Reserve. I think it was already peak, then.
The Antelope Valley Reserve was just peaking last weekend. It’s not too late to go! I blogged (w/ pics) about A.V. and Joshua Tree’s wildflowers here: http://indietraveler.blogspot.com/2010/04/socal-desert-blooms-poppies-cacti-more.html
My family and I went out to the poppy reserve today and the weather was perfect.
