If you’re looking for another great spot for springtime wildflowers, the Carizzo Plain National Monument is a good place to head.
I went there last year as part of a wildflower tag team with Pinnacles National Monument, and while I found the Plain to be desolately beautiful, there wasn’t that much of a flower show when I was there. However, Calipidder made a trek to the Monument recently, and had a much better show.

Thanks for the link – we sure are lucky to have this stuff in our backyard. Hard to take a bad pic when nature gives you that kind of subject!
One of the other neat things about Carizzo (though I haven’t personally tried it yet since no one I know has the time) is that you can free-camp along the 4wd roads in the hills surrounding the plain. For those who don’t backpack, it’s a neat alternative to getting out into the wilds…
