A Happy 2013 to everyone!

As some of you may remember, the show I wrote for finished its production at the end of December, so now I find myself with quite a bit more free time on my hands. So far this year I’ve just done a few short local hikes to get moving, but tomorrow I’ll be going off the grid for ten days.

Surprisingly, this particular trip won’t involve any hiking – but I will be in Joshua Tree at the Southern California Vipassana Center. I’m not a meditator, but this class was recommended by dozens of people and none of them could put into words what the class actually did – so that intrigue combined with my resolution to not be afraid to try new things will have me driving off into the desert tomorrow afternoon. And hey – if I freak out and have to leave, I can get in a few J-Tree hikes before I head home.

When I get back, I’ve got a huge list of things I want to do for Modern Hiker that I’ll finally actually have time to accomplish – so stay tuned for some hopefully great things soon … just forgive me for not being able to answer any emails or questions until I get back. Until then …

Hey Casey – hope you’re having a good time in the desert. I’m back from my travels and slowly working my way back onto the internet (as well as seeking work). Shoot me an email if you’d like to work on any projects together or, if you’re in northern California, just want to head into the hills for a hike.

I would love to get into meditation, and I feel like going to a guided meditation center like that would be great. I’ll have to look into something similar in the Northeast!

My mother who just turned 76 spent ten days at the center last year meditating for ten hours a day for ten days. I thought she was crazy and brave all at the same time. She wanted to leave the very first night but stuck through the entire experience. In the end she left a more patient person and truly experienced her inner thoughts. Good luck!
On a side note I hope you can get in a nice hike at the end.

PS – The wife and I are going camping in Joshua Tree at the end of February, I can’t wait!

    Hey Casey,
Enjoy the Vipassana Center. It is a place that Derek has wanted to go for many years. There is one here in Shelburne. The farmer Derek worked for in Cali goes every year. I am sure it will be a life changing 10 days.
Imagine 10 days of silence….wow. Enjoy
