Anza-Borrego State Park: Calcite Mine and The Slot

Two short hikes in some of the best Slot Canyons in Southern California. Lots of squeezing through walls, scrambling in and out of canyons, and generally feeling like you’re in an Indiana Jones movie. The Calcite Mine area is also home to a historic WWII-era mining area, with other man-made features to explore.

Mount Hollywood Trail Reopened

In happier wildfire-related news, the Mount Hollywood hiking trail has officially re-opened in Griffith Park, after being nearly decimated by a wildfire earlier this year that took down almost a quarter of the park.

Our local ABC affiliate has a short video of the actual opening, complete with showboating Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

For more information on what’s still closed over at Griffith, be sure to check out their new recovery blog. I don’t do much hiking up there, myself, but it looks like they’re handing out hefty fines to hikers who stray from the open areas …

Hiking Burkhart Trail to Burkhart Saddle

A lengthy trip from the high desert to the high peaks of the San Gabriels. This trail will take you through several California Climate zones - from Joshua Trees to Jeffrey Pines - and show off some weird and wonderful geologic features along the way. A great, rarely-used path, nice for a long day hike or backpacking trip deeper into the mountains.
