A short stint on the Pacific Crest Trail to a mountain with a lot of history. A cool, shaded, north-face trail takes you to the summit’s old Nike Missile radio base, while (an alleged) bushwhack leads to old gold mines.
The most challenging peak in the front range of the San Gabriels. This trail loops through a shaded canyon, brush, and exposed rock-face Class Three bouldering before descending to idyllic meadows in the shadow of Strawberry Peak’s dramatic north face. Hands down, one of the best hikes in Los Angeles.
A post-storm trip on the Pacific Crest Trail to one of the ‘lower high’ peaks on the north range of the San Gabriels. A little bit of snow-hiking, some bouldering, and just a touch of backcountry navigation to round off the trip. A great trek to a lightly-traveled peak. The summit of Mount Pacifico has a beautiful campground, and is also accessible by fire road.
I was going through the ol’ blog-archives, and found an old trip to Icehouse Canyon. Since I’ve already written-up a few other trails that go through the canyon, I won’t give this the full treatment. This was written on my first time in the Canyon. It is now one of my all-time favorite hikes — an incredibly peaceful streambed canyon amid high-altitude mountains and forests. This is about as far from urban Los Angeles as you can feel without driving for six hours.

A short hike to one of Southern California’s classic hiking destinations. An easy route that can extend as far as you want, with great opportunities for climbing and a wonderful place to refresh your bouldering skills.
As we continued our unscheduled surprise hike through the wilderness of Kamakura, we came upon many of the same sorts of things we saw while walking through Takao-san: rugged, rocky trails; dense forests; elderly, fit hikers; and shrines hidden and carved just about everywhere you could think of putting one.
A mid-length, easy hike to tackle two mountains on the Hundred Peaks List. Not a lot of elevation gain, but fantastic views of the San Gabriels and some of the urban areas outside the Angeles National Forest, and an historic fire tower.
Toward the end of last year, I was fortunate enough to travel to Tokyo for just over a week for work. It was a stressful, wonderful experience … and as I was pretty much on an independent shooting schedule from the rest of the crews, I had plenty of time to explore the city after I was done filming for the day.
And, of course, I also managed to sneak in some hiking trips on our ‘down days.’ This is a short hike I did on one of those days. I’ll post a few more of my more nature-oriented Japanese tales later.

A long, strenuous hike to one of the more remote peaks in the western Angeles National Forest. A great cool-weather route with some challenging sections of scramble, this hike is an exercise in mental drive — and the enjoyment of some pure seclusion amid the mountains.
