Shop
While hiking isn’t an expensive sport, heading into an outdoor store to drop cash on gear can be intimidating. Here are all of the products that I have personally used and enjoyed on the trail, with links to sites where you can buy a few of them.
Buying through these links will not only get you some excellent gear from great retailers, but it will also help support the upkeep of Modern Hiker!
CLOTHES
From t-shirts to fleeces to socks and boots, what you wear on your body can make all the difference on the trail. Here’s what I use on most of my dayhikes and backpacks to keep comfortable.
TRAIL GEAR
Some gear items are necessities – they’ll keep you from getting hungry, dehydrated, or lost. Others just make the trip much more enjoyable, like natural insect repellents and lip balms with SPF.
BOOKS
Sometimes your plans change at the last minute and you need a new trail to hike, or maybe you just like to have a bunch of trail descriptions and directions with you in book-format, too. Find trail guides, travel stories, and other great on-the-trail reads here.

Can you please recommend a gps tracking device that will send location to a website in real-time? (i.e., so family can track our location while hiking). THANKS!
I hiked with a guy a couple of weeks ago on Mt Baldy. He had a Delorne inTouch. It was hooked up, via satellite, to his android phone. This device has a subscription of $10 a month. Don’t know of anything else that can do this. If no cell reception then this is the only way to go. You can also send a very limited amount of text with this device.
